To members of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Councils and Committees:

Earlier this year, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation to create a statewide coordinating council to guide education policy and integrate education at every level, from preschool through graduate school. The Governor will appoint members to the Illinois P-20 Council which will include representation from the business community. We have been asked to submit candidates for the five seats on this council representing business and we want your input.

This legislation, Public Act 095-0626, lays out a broad scope in establishing this new standing council. Members will serve 3-year terms and membership will rotate as terms expire. This council's recommendations will have great reach and influence in addressing the future of education in Illinois.

The law sets forth significant objectives for this council to undertake, addressing policies to improve the full scope of education to eliminate fragmented approaches and improve education at and transitioning through each level. The Illinois P-20 Council will make recommendations to better align curriculum and assessments, improve graduation rates, academic standards and workforce readiness, articulate a framework for systemic educational improvement, prepare/recruit/fund qualified teachers, and estimate the fiscal impact to implement the recommendations.

This is just a summary of the council’s charge, and I encourage you to read the full program description in the legislation.

If you or someone you know might wish to be nominated as a candidate for the Illinois P-20 Council representing business, I want to hear from you. This is an opportunity to make the voice of business heard and really make a difference in the future quality of education in our state.

If you care to nominate someone for consideration for this group, please email me no later than Friday, December 5. I encourage you to forward this message to your associates who may know a good candidate.

Thank you, and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
