A message to Illinois Chamber members:
While we so often focus on policy issues that directly affect business, another key to Illinois’ future prosperity is education. I want to encourage you to get involved in an excellent program that provides scholarships for Illinois high school students and recognizes business and community leadership: the third annual Lincolnland Legends Essay and Scholarship Contest, organized by Illinois Dollars for Scholars.

Please read the message below from Dick Dystrup, Executive Director of Illinois Dollars for Scholars. Then, I’d like you to take action:

  • Local chambers: please ensure your high schools are aware of and participating in the program, and pass this on to your members who may be potential Lincolnland Legends in Business and Community Leadership. Volunteer to help students identify business leaders who would be good candidates as subjects of these essays and potential Lincolnland Legend honorees.
  • Chamber members: encourage your area high schools to participate. Volunteer to help the school identify business leaders to be the subjects of scholarship-worthy essays based on the business and community leadership criteria.
  • Pass this information on to high school juniors or seniors in your family or community, and among your employees who may have eligible children, and encourage them to apply for these very desirable scholarships.

Help the Illinois Chamber help Illinois Dollars for Scholars in publicizing this exciting opportunity to encourage Illinois’ future leaders and recognize today’s business leaders as Lincolnland Legends. Thanks.

Dear Chamber Members,

Thank you for the opportunity to inform you about our third annual Lincolnland Legends Essay and Scholarship Contest. We hope you will help us spread the word about our contest and encourage students to apply.

We recently launched our Third Annual Lincolnland Legends Essay and Scholarship Contest for the current school year. Application packets have been distributed to every high school in Illinois. Up to 19 winners will be selected from among entries received – one from each of Illinois’ Congressional districts. The winning essay from each district will earn a $3,000 scholarship for its student author. The top two essays from this finalist group will earn the writers additional scholarship funds. This year, the writer of the state’s top essay will receive an additional $7,000 award, and the second place essay writer will receive an additional $2,000. A Gala honoring all Legends nominees and their student writers will be held April 5, 2008 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield.

This year’s Lincolnland Legends category is Business and Community Leadership. Any Illinois high school junior or senior may write an essay about a business leader who is eligible for this special recognition. Nominees must be a current or former resident of the student’s congressional district in Illinois, and still living. Essays will be judged on the demonstration of the nominee’s connection to Illinois, the description of the nominee’s accomplishment in business and community leadership, the description of what the nominee has done to warrant admiration, and the overall grammar, persuasiveness, and inspirational value of the essay.

We hope you will help us impact the lives of college-bound students from across the state by spreading the word about the program and helping students identify individuals to nominate. We suggest that you contact your local high schools and offer to assist students who are interested in applying for this scholarship. One way you can help is identifying business leaders who may be potential nominees students could write their essays about.

Nominations must be 750 to 1,000 words typed in essay form and accompanied by the application form. Essays must be received by December 3, 2007 via mail. Five copies of the application and essay must be submitted. The application form and information is available on our website, http://www.illinoisdollarsforscholars.org.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Dick Dystrup
