Money Raised -
Money Spent: 2006 Candidates
File
Voters, media and political insiders
received their first insight of the '06 campaign season last
week. Last Tuesday, Jan. 31, was the final day to file
semi-annual fundraising reports with the Illinois State Board
of Elections. The Political Insider takes a look at the
six major gubernatorial candidates as well as a number of the
contested legislative primaries from across the
state.
Blagojevich has
Commanding Lead; Gidwitz Outraises other GOP
Challengers
Gov.
Blagojevich has for weeks contended that he has been
too busy governing to worry about politics. Blagojevich
has yet to announce his re-election campaign and has refused
to engage in any discussion surrounding the Democratic
challenger former Chicago Alderman Edwin Eisendrath.
Yet, Blagojevich has managed to amass a campaign war chest
unequalled by any challenger, Democrat or Republican. In
the final six months of 2005, July through December,
Blagojevich raised $1.9 million while spending $776,000 and as
of December 31, 2005 had $15.5 million on
hand.
Blagojevich's Democratic challenger Edwin Eisendrath began his
campaign on December 18th and only had about two weeks to
raise money before filing. Eisendrath, whose family
reportedly has the means by which to finance his campaign, has
yet to say how much personal money he is willing to expend in
the primary contest. Given the limited amount of time
Eisendrath has had campaigning, elevating his name ID and
raising money, he has seen modest success. Since
announcing, Eisendrath reported raising $182,000 including
$80,000 in loans, spending $15,000 and had $167,000 on hand at
the end of the year.
On the Republican side of the
aisle, businessman Ron
Gidwitz out-raised the other three GOP gubernatorial
candidates. Gidwitz raised $2.6 million in the past 6
months. Gidwitz also gave himself $1 million and loaned
his campaign $500,000. During that same period, the
Gidwitz campaign spent just over $5 million and had $188,000
in cash on hand and $1.8 million in investments.
Having
waited the longest to decide upon running for Governor, state
Treasurer Judy Baar
Topinka began her campaign in earnest once former
Governor Jim Edgar decided not to seek another term in
office. Topinka reported raising $455,000 while spending
$452,000 and had $1.4 million in the bank.
State
Senator Bill Brady and
businessman Jim
Oberweis have both been running for Governor for close
to a year. Oberweis, having unsuccessfully run twice for
U.S. Senate, is attempting to run as the reform
candidate. Brady, with a conservative voting record in
the Illinois Senate, is vigorously courting the conservative
grassroots Republican voter. Oberweis reported
collecting $739,000 with $500,000 in loans, spending $989,000
and having $458,000 on hand. Brady raised $439,000 with
$150,000 in loans, spent $641,000 and ended the year with
$391,000 in the bank.
The next filing period is the
pre-election report and then whenever a candidate receives
$500 or more within 30 days of the primary, they are required
to report that contribution within 24 hours to the State Board
of Elections.
