Former State Rep. & US Senate Candidate Jim Durkin Replaces Rep. Lyons

Former State Rep. and GOP U.S. Senate Candidate Jim Durkin was appointed to fill out retiring State Rep. Eileen Lyons' term last week.  Lyons had represented the 82nd District-Western Springs until deciding this past fall to retire.  Durkin was joined at last week's swearing in by House Republican Leader Tom Cross along with family and friends.  "I'm flattered, I'm honored and I am very thankful I received the support of Eileen as her successor as well as the support of my committeemen and Tom Cross," said Durkin.  Durkin has filed to run for election this year and faces Bill Seith in the GOP primary.

Governor Proposes $3B Road Plan

With hopes of an election year capital plan, Gov. Blagojevich and legislative leaders have been negotiating the largest infrastructure plan since former Gov. Ryan's "Illinois First" plan.  The plan, which will be announced later in January, would provide $2 billion for roads and another $1 billion for schools and public transit.  Senate GOP Leader Frank Watson indicated his caucus would look at the Governor's proposal and expressed his belief that the state should look at the $175 million "windfall" from increased gasoline sales tax revenues.  Watson also stressed that Republicans would be hesitant to support any plan unless Blagojevich agrees to share the project money with Republican districts.

Eisendrath Begins Campaign in Earnest

Edwin Eisendrath stepped up his campaign last week by touring the state to speak about his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Governor.  Eisendrath stopped in several downstate communities and continued to discuss his campaign stance against public corruption.  "The idea that the Republicans can credibly campaign against corruption in the governor's office while a former Republican governor (George Ryan) is on trial for corruption is incredible," Eisendrath said.

Administration Calls for Stringent Mercury Controls

Gov. Blagojevich called for new, strict standards for mercury emissions to be implemented by 2009.  The plan calls for a 90% reduction in mercury emissions from coal-fired plants over the course of the next three years.  The Governor's proposal is more stringent than the current federal guidelines which seek a 70% reduction by 2018.
