Illinois Employers Must Comply with Family Military Act
Effective immediately, Illinois employers must extend unpaid leave to workers whose spouse or child has been called into military service for 30 days or more. The new Illinois Family Military Leave Act (P.A. 094-0589) imposes the following leave requirements on Illinois employers: Illinois employers with a payroll of 15 to 50 workers must offer up to 15 days of unpaid military leave during a time of either federal or state deployment. Those with 50+ workers must provide up to 30 days of unpaid leave.  MORE

Employees Cannot Waive FMLA Rights
A new debate has emerged in the federal appeal courts. According to a recent decision by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals (including Maryland, North & South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia), any employee waiver of Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) rights is unenforceable. Compensation in return for the waiver does not cure the defect in this jurisdiction. The Fourth Circuit ruling stands in direct conflict with a decision handed down by another appeals court. Look for the High Court to weigh in on the issue sometime in the future.  MORE

Big Jump in Director’s Pay

At least half of the companies polled plan to beef up both the number of domestic & international trips as well as the number of workers taking them. Other surveyors disagree, however. MORE

Looking for Fun? Try Work
It’s time for the critics to give it a rest. The fact of the matter is this: many U.S. employers actually shine in their workers eyes. Of those responding to a new study conducted by the professional staffing firm, Hudson Highland Group, 70% say that they are actually having fun at work. In addition more than three-fourths (76%) of American workers say they are either very or somewhat satisfied with their work-life balance. While 39% of those responding work 40+ hours per week, only 14% say that weekly conflicts arise between work and family life.  MORE
